Inspired by the molecular structure of steel, the idea emerged to open up the crucible of the new visitor and exhibition center of voestalpine AG and treat it as a large-scale spatial environment. Analogous to the crystalline structure of metals, it was equipped with a grid of spheres symbolizing the smallest indivisible building blocks of the material.

Some of the spheres are accessible, interactively staged with multimedia content, or equipped with exhibits, thus serving as key mediators of information and experience. This walkable installation allows visitors to immerse themselves in the core material of the exhibition in a playful way, creating the sensation of literally “entering” steel.

The surfaces of the spheres are mirrored, causing them to multiply visually within themselves, illustrating the material’s diverse possibilities. Through this surface treatment, visitors become part of the exhibition. The entire interior of the crucible is transformed by a light and media installation into a constantly evolving stage space for steel.
