The design of the memorial makes a clear distinction between the authentic site as a ‘bearer of history’ and the documentation and exhibition areas. The layers of multimedia information stand out from the historic building fabric, drawing a distinction between the authentic and the new. The exhibition is divided into a prologue, a victims’ section, a perpetrators’ section and an epilogue. To begin with, the different phases of imprisonment are distinguished using an abstract model of the prison complex, which is brought to life through multimedia. This introduction is accompanied by audio testimonies from the prisoners. The large hall of the victims’ section illustrates the fates of the prisoners through five key themes. Large illuminated panels, overlaid with projections, structure the space, identify the thematic areas and highlight authentic locations related to the themes. In the adjoining Perpetrators’ Area, which has been largely preserved, the use of architectural elements is reduced to a walkway featuring display cases with object installations. The original surfaces remain clearly visible to visitors and are subtly enhanced with ephemeral typographic projections.

In the basement, visitors gain an authentic impression of the so-called ‘U-Boot’, a windowless prison wing. The exhibition design is even more understated here. Only one cell features multimedia displays to present key facts in an educational manner. An interactive monitor tells the stories of those who were once imprisoned in the cells. The epilogue concludes the tour with contemporary testimonies from the victims.
