Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte

Bavaria and Olympia 1896 – 2022

The temporary exhibition "Bavaria and Olympia 1896 – 2022" at the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte serves as a thematic extension and integrates itself seamlessly into the experience of the permanent exhibition of the 1972 Olympic Games.

Bavaria is considered a home for top-level sports and has already hosted two Olympic Games in the past, both of which are firmly linked to world events of the respective time and carry with them a history that goes far beyond sports.

The independent approach of the temporary exhibition bathed in blue is emphasized by a clearly defined starting point and the consistent use of color. Foiled floor graphics and spackled and polished plywood surfaces in the same color tone, allow for a clearly recognizable routing. A timeline acts as the connecting element between the two parts of the exhibition, simultaneously providing an overview of the presented events.

The exhibition is framed by a film playing in the museum's cinema, which takes visitors on an Olympic time journey from 1936 to the present. Visitors to the exhibition get the opportunity to marvel at the ski jumping outfit worn by Andreas Wellinger, 2018 Olympic champion in Pyeongchang, or the replica of the four-man bobsled from Andreas Ostler's 1952 Olympic triumph in Oslo. In addition to that, they get to experience further original sports equipment, souvenirs and medals that tell the story of Bavarian Olympic heroes and the past Games.
