The concept and contemporary exhibition design are characterized by dialogical formats, the use of a wide range of interactive media, and a consistent focus on participation. The StadtPalais is a place where history is discovered, the present is discussed, and the future of the city is envisioned. In this sense, the three opening exhibitions form a conceptual and spatial triptych: The permanent exhibition “Stuttgart City Stories” tells the identity-shaping history of the city. In the interactive experience exhibition “Sound of Stuttgart,” visitors can rediscover their city through the sense of hearing. The future development of Stuttgart can be shaped and discussed in the discursive format “Stuttgart and You 2038,” set within a fantastical cityscape.

“Stuttgart City Stories” begins in the present: What do residents think about their city, and what does it actually mean to become a Stuttgarter? At the center, visitors encounter a detailed city model. This large-scale topographic representation is animated through media: the “surface” of the city is brought to life with projected aspects of urban society.

Around the model, auditory “city conversations” provide an immersive insight into key events of the city’s history. In the interactive areas “Spirit” and “Form,” white models of buildings and symbolic objects spark individual interest. When placed on a media surface, they trigger digital narratives with background information and deeper context. In two century rooms, over 200 exhibits provide insight into Stuttgart’s urban history. Visitors also encounter wire sculptures by Stuttgart artist Jan Hoos, transforming into sculptural portraits of individuals who influenced the city’s development.

n a multimedia tour, personalities ranging from hip-hop musicians to street newspaper sellers share their personal Stuttgart stories. For younger visitors, a multimedia guide developed with Galileo Elementary School was created by children for children, offering an authentic experience.
